Cushions: How many is too many for the bed?

November 9, 2017

While cushions are something that men and women never seem to agree on, there’s no denying their essential place in styling a bed. The perfect way to inject colour, texture and interest (particularly if your bed linen is on the plainer side), they are a relatively inexpensive way to really complete a space.

Interior designer and The Block judge Darren Palmer believes nine is the limit for the number of cushions a bed should hold. This is obviously highly subjective but what do you think is the perfect number?

Begin with larger sized European cushions at the back and then introduce a smaller 50cm x 50cm square cushion before finishing off with a central feature cushion (or three!).

To maintain the best cushion shape and keep them looking their best, you must plump and rotate your cushions. A simple trick is pushing the sides in and dropping them onto a clean floor to push air back inside the cushion. Also, don’t forget to rotate your cushions so they wear evenly.

Layering different shaped and sized cushions creates depth and sophistication. The number one rule is to always have a bigger cushion behind a smaller one. Using round, triangle or knot cushions are also a great way to add interest too, especially in kids’ bedrooms.

Cushions are the soft furnishings that bring a space together and can enhance the overall ambience of the room. Whether you are starting from scratch or want to enhance your existing space, you want to make sure when implementing the above tips, you create harmony between each piece. Pick an existing colour to draw from.

Buttons, visible decorative zips and tassels are the small cushion details that can make a big difference when creating a sumptuous styled bed.
